Israel Strikes Houthi 'Energy Infrastructure Site' in Yemen

Jerusalem, August 17, 2025: The Israeli military announced on Sunday that it conducted airstrikes targeting an "energy infrastructure site" in Yemen’s rebel-held capital, Sanaa, used by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels. The military statement did not specify the exact site but described it as a facility serving the "Houthi terrorist regime." Yemen’s Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV reported that the attack targeted the Haziz power plant south of Sanaa, citing a civil defense source. No immediate casualty reports were available.

The strike comes amid ongoing tensions, with the Houthis launching repeated missile and drone attacks on Israel since the Israel-Hamas war began in October 2023, claiming solidarity with Palestinians. Most of these attacks have been intercepted, but they have prompted Israeli retaliatory airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen. The Israeli military stated that the latest strikes were in response to "repeated attacks" by the Houthis, including a missile intercepted on Thursday, which the Houthis claimed responsibility for.

In addition to targeting Israel, the Houthis have attacked ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden linked to Israel, the United States, and Britain. Following U.S. and British military strikes in January 2024 to secure the waterway, the Houthis expanded their campaign. A ceasefire with the U.S. was reached in May, halting intense U.S. strikes, but the Houthis vowed to continue targeting Israeli-linked ships.
