In Tangail, a fish trader has received an extortion letter from a group identifying itself as the "Killer Gang," demanding Tk 5 lakh. The letter, which has gone viral on social media, has sparked widespread fear among local traders.
On Friday (August 1) morning, fish trader Md. Azaharul Islam received the letter. The previous night, Thursday, an unknown individual handed the letter to one of Azaharul’s employees at his workplace in the Santosh area of the upazila’s municipal region.
The letter threatens dire consequences if Azaharul shares the matter with anyone or seeks legal recourse, stating, “If you discuss this with anyone or take legal action, we will ensure your family never finds your body.” It further warns, “Remember, the authorities won’t always be there to protect you. You won’t survive. Make a wise decision to keep yourself and your family safe.” The letter also notes, “You’ve been running a fish business for a long time without any competitors. Tk 5 lakh is nothing for you.” It instructs Azaharul to leave the money in a shopping bag under a tree marked with a photo of someone named Farhad, near Mahmudul Hasan’s house in Kagmari, by 7 PM on Sunday, August 3.
Md. Zubayer Hossain, convener of the Santosh Bazaar Committee, said, “Azaharul is an honest man who has been in the fish trade for years. This morning, we learned about the letter demanding Tk 5 lakh. Such an incident is unprecedented in Santosh since Bangladesh’s independence, and it has created fear among traders.”
Azaharul, visibly shaken, shared, “My employee Nisha, who is illiterate and has worked for me for years, received the letter from an unknown person on Thursday night. He handed it to me on Friday morning, saying it was from a club. After reading it, I’ve been gripped by fear, and my family is terrified. I’ve verbally informed the officer-in-charge at Santosh Police Outpost, who has spoken to senior officials. I plan to file a written complaint at Sadar Police Station tonight.”
Tangail’s Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle), HM Mahbub Rezwan Siddiqui told, “I’m aware of the situation and have spoken to the Sadar Police Station OC, Tanvir. Instructions have been issued, and we’ve begun a swift investigation. This is a new occurrence in Tangail, and we are examining it thoroughly
