On Friday (August 1), around 6:45 PM, police cleared Shahbag intersection in Dhaka, allowing vehicular movement to resume after dispersing the ‘July Warriors’ who had been staging a sit-in. The police also removed their makeshift stage following a clash between two factions of the group.
The ‘July Warriors’ had been blocking Shahbag intersection since Thursday (July 31) at 11 AM, demanding the declaration of a ‘July Charter.’ This blockade halted all vehicular movement through Shahbag, with protesters setting up tarpaulins in the middle of the road and delivering speeches from a temporary stage, surrounded by barricades.
The faction opposing the blockade told journalists, “The true July Warriors would not block roads and cause public suffering. However, some individuals, under the guise of being July Warriors, are harassing the public by blocking Shahbag intersection. We strongly protest against this.”
