Local and Foreign Syndicate Robbery in Chattogram Targets Expatriates

A well-organized robbery syndicate targeting expatriate passengers has been active in Chattogram. Recently, police arrested seven members of this gang after they looted gold ornaments, cash, and a mobile phone worth approximately BDT 20 lakh from a Dubai-returnee passenger. While the gang operates locally, its leadership and information supply come from abroad.

The incident took place on July 23, when Mohammad Samsu Uddin, returning from Dubai, hired a CNG auto-rickshaw from Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram to travel to Sagarpara Link Road in Halishahar. Near Dogirkhal Bridge, a black microbus blocked the CNG, and three armed robbers from the microbus stole goods worth around BDT 19.82 lakh, including gold ornaments, cash, and a phone, before escaping.

Following a case filed at Halishahar Police Station, police launched an investigation, arresting seven members of the syndicate and recovering a significant portion of the stolen items. On Thursday (August 7), during a press conference at Dampara Police Lines, Chattogram Metropolitan Police’s Deputy Commissioner (West) Hosain Mohammad Kabir Bhuiyan shared these details. Police revealed that a local syndicate received photos, arrival dates, and other details of expatriate passengers from Dubai. The arrested Syed Mozibul Haque collected this information via WhatsApp from an expatriate named Foysal. Under the leadership of Monir Uddin, the gang executed robberies targeting returning passengers. The arrested individuals are: Md. Monir Uddin (33), Syed Mozibul Haque (47), Md. Alim Hawladar Jabed (32), Md. Hasan (30), Md. Rubel (27), Md. Sumon (26), and Md. Imran Mahamudul alias Imon (25). DC Kabir stated that the police first traced and seized the microbus used in the robbery from the Panchlaish area. Subsequent operations across the city and district led to the arrest of the seven suspects. During initial interrogations, the suspects attempted to shift blame but later confessed that the stolen gold was sold at a shop in the Pathania Goda area. Based on this information, police recovered 5 bhori and 11 ana of gold and two expensive mobile phones. DC Kabir further noted that Mozibul, Hasan, and Rubel have prior cases against them under the Arms Act, Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, and Speedy Trial Act. Legal proceedings against the arrested individuals are ongoing.
