Main Accused Arrested in Shariatpur Ambulance Detention Case Linked to Newborn's Death

In Shariatpur, the main accused, Sabuj Dewan, has been arrested in connection with a case filed over the death of a newborn allegedly caused by the detention of an ambulance. The arrest was made in a joint operation by the police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in the early hours of Saturday, following the filing of the case by the newborn’s father, Nur Hossain, on Friday night. The case names five individuals as accused.

The incident occurred on Thursday night in Shariatpur town’s Chourangi area, where local ambulance drivers allegedly detained an ambulance carrying a critically ill newborn. The newborn, born to Nur Hossain Sardar and Ruma Begum from Koneshwar Chhatiani village in Damudya Upazila, died after the delay. The ambulance was en route to Dhaka for urgent medical treatment when it was stopped.

Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the other accused. On Saturday morning, at New Metro Diagnostic Centre, a private clinic in Shariatpur town, the newborn’s mother, Ruma Begum, was seen grieving inconsolably. She was heard saying, “I carried my child in my womb for 10 months. Why did he have to go? Why did you let him die? Who will I live for now?” Local sources revealed that Nur Hossain, a power worker in Dhaka, had brought his wife, Ruma Begum, to a clinic in Shariatpur town when she went into labor. On Thursday, Ruma gave birth to a boy at a clinic in Chourangi Mor. The newborn developed breathing difficulties and other complications, and Ruma also faced health issues. Following advice from pediatric specialist Dr. Khaja Humayun Kabir to seek advanced treatment in Dhaka, the family hired an ambulance around 8 PM. However, at Chourangi Mor, local ambulance driver Sabuj Dewan and three to four others allegedly blocked the ambulance, questioning why a Dhaka-based ambulance was being used instead of a local one. The confrontation led to a physical altercation and prolonged delay, during which the newborn passed away due to lack of timely medical care. Nur Hossain filed a case late Friday night at Palong Model Police Station, naming Sabuj Dewan as the main accused along with four others. Speaking to Prothom Alo, Nur Hossain said, “We are poor people. Expensive medical services are beyond our means, so we hired an affordable ambulance to take our sick child to Dhaka. That decision cost us our son due to the cruelty of the ambulance syndicate. Initially, I didn’t want to file a case, but with encouragement from others, I did. I demand that the culprits be arrested and brought to justice swiftly.” Palong Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Helal Uddin told Prothom Alo that the case involves charges of causing death by negligence due to obstructing the road. The main accused has been arrested, and efforts are underway to apprehend the others.
