U.S. President Donald Trump has labeled Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi an “extremely dangerous person.” He also claimed that the conflict between India and Pakistan, which began following an attack in Pehelgam, Jammu and Kashmir in May, was resolved solely due to his phone call.Speaking to journalists during a U.S. cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Trump said, “When the India-Pakistan conflict started, I called Modi and asked him what was going on with Pakistan. I consider him an extremely dangerous person. His anger and hatred were clearly evident during the call. The hostility between the two countries is longstanding, like centuries-old enmity.”
Trump further revealed that during the call, he warned Modi, saying, “I told him I don’t want to do any trade deals with you. If the conflict escalates to a nuclear war, that will be your fate. I also said, if you don’t call tomorrow and stop the conflict, I won’t just cancel the trade deal, I’ll impose tariffs that will make your head spin.”
Notably, tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after a terrorist attack in Pehelgam, Jammu and Kashmir on April 22. On May 4, India launched “Operation Sindur,” claiming to have killed over 70 members of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).
In response, the Pakistan Army launched “Operation Bunyan ul Marsus” on May 7. Pakistan claimed that the operation resulted in 31 deaths and 27 injuries in India.
After five days of continuous conflict, both countries agreed to a ceasefire on May 9. While Islamabad credited Trump for the resolution, New Delhi did not acknowledge this claim.
Post-conflict, relations between Delhi and Trump have further deteriorated. As a result, the U.S. recently imposed a 50 percent export tariff on Indian goods, which came into effect on Wednesday.
