The deceased have been identified as Namita Rani Pal (42) and her daughter Tanvi Rani Pal (18). Namita was the wife of the late Jiban Chandra Pal.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Burichang Police Station, Azizul Haque, confirmed the incident.
Local residents reported that after Jiban Chandra Pal's death, Namita took charge of the family. With no earning male member in the household, she managed the family with her three daughters, two of whom are already married. To support herself and her youngest daughter, Tanvi, Namita worked at a garment factory. However, she had been unable to work for the past two months due to illness, resulting in a loss of income. The family struggled to meet daily expenses, and Namita faced immense mental stress due to her inability to repay loans taken from various NGOs.
According to OC Azizul Haque, on Wednesday morning, neighbors noticed the door of their house was locked. After repeated calls went unanswered, they broke open the door and found the mother and daughter in critical condition. They were rushed to Comilla Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared them dead. Preliminary investigations suggest that they died after consuming poison.
The police believe that extreme poverty may have driven them to take this drastic step. The bodies have been sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy, and legal proceedings are underway.
