The Brazilian national football team’s home jersey is traditionally yellow and green, while the away jersey has always been blue. However, ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup, the Brazil Football Confederation (CBF) found itself embroiled in controversy over a proposed red away jersey designed by Nike for the Seleção.
In April, news leaked that Brazil’s national team might wear red jerseys at the World Cup, sparking a storm of criticism on social media. In Brazil, red is a politically charged color, symbolizing the leftist Workers’ Party, led by current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Conversely, supporters of former right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro often use the traditional green and yellow colors of the national flag in political rallies. As a result, the jersey color debate quickly shifted from football to politics.
Renowned sports journalist Paulo Vinícius Coelho commented on the issue, saying, “This decision reflects a lack of political sensitivity. Especially when one political group has already adopted yellow as its symbol, a red jersey would have created even greater confusion.”
