India Rejects Bangladesh’s Claim of Awami League Offices, Calls Allegation ‘Misplaced

India has refuted allegations by Bangladesh that the banned Awami League has established political offices on Indian soil, stating it is unaware of any such activities and does not permit political campaigns against other countries from its territory.

On Wednesday, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal responded to media queries, saying, “The Government of India is not aware of any anti-Bangladesh activities by purported members of the Awami League in India or of any action that is contrary to Indian law. The Government does not allow political activities against other countries to be carried out from Indian soil.” He termed the press statement by Bangladesh’s interim government as “misplaced.”

The response came after Dhaka lodged a strong protest, urging India to shut down what it called “reported offices” of the Awami League in Delhi and Kolkata and to halt anti-Bangladesh activities by the party’s fugitive leaders. The interim government, formed after the ouster of Sheikh Hasina in the July 2024 uprising, warned that such activities could strain bilateral relations. Dhaka alleged that senior Awami League leaders, many facing charges of crimes against humanity, were conducting political activities from India, including a public outreach event at the Delhi Press Club last month. It described the alleged offices as “an unambiguous affront against the people and State of Bangladesh.” India, however, emphasized its stance on Bangladesh’s political process, with Jaiswal stating, “India reiterates its expectation that free, fair, and inclusive elections will be held at the earliest in Bangladesh to ascertain the will and mandate of the people.” This exchange highlights a rare diplomatic tension between the two neighbors, whose relations have been strained since the fall of Hasina’s government and the subsequent political transition in Dhaka.
