In a joint operation conducted by the army and police, a raid was carried out at the hideout of notorious drug dealer Bunia Sohail in Mohammadpur’s Geneva Camp, resulting in the recovery of Tk 1 crore 13 lakh in cash, cocktail bombs, a large quantity of drugs, and various weapons.
The operation took place around 3 AM on Friday (August 15). The joint forces seized 13 live cocktail bombs, 25 partially prepared cocktails, 400 grams of gunpowder, two samurai swords, 12 hockey sticks, 29 helmets, two dragon lights, 11 kilograms of cannabis, 12 packets of heroin, Tk 1 crore 13 lakh in cash, and a money-counting machine.
An officer from the 46 Independent Infantry Brigade stated that based on prior intelligence, it was known that Bunia Sohail would be present at Geneva Camp that night. The joint forces launched the operation to apprehend him. However, as soon as the forces arrived, the power supply was cut off, allowing the suspects to escape under the cover of darkness. Due to narrow alleys and adjacent buildings, capturing Sohail was not possible. Nevertheless, a significant amount of cash, drugs, and materials used for terrorist activities were recovered.
Law enforcement officials reported that Bunia Sohail has 38 cases against him, including charges related to murder, explosives, and drugs. Earlier this year, he was arrested but released on bail after six months in prison, after which he resumed his criminal activities.
Notably, two days prior, 13 of Sohail’s associates were arrested in connection with a murder case in Geneva Camp, but Sohail managed to escape. The army has stated that operations will continue until Bunia Sohail and his accomplices are apprehended. All seized items have been handed over to Mohammadpur Police Station for legal proceedings.
