In a case involving the burning of six protesters' bodies during the July mass uprising in Ashulia, near Dhaka, former Member of Parliament Muhammad Saiful Islam and 15 other accused have filed applications for discharge. The applications were submitted by the defense lawyers to the International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Wednesday.
Previously, on August 7, the prosecution had applied for framing charges against the accused in this case related to crimes against humanity. Following the applications from both the prosecution and the defense, the tribunal fixed August 21 as the date for issuing an order on the framing of charges.
The International Crimes Tribunal-2, led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, set this date. The other two members of the tribunal are Justice Md. Manjurul Basit and Justice Noor Mohammad Shahriar Kabir.
The case involves a total of 16 accused, of whom eight are currently in custody and were produced before the tribunal today. The arrested accused include former Additional Superintendent of Police (Savar Circle) Md. Shahidul Islam, former Additional Superintendent of Police (Dhaka District) Abdullahil Kafi, former Inspector of Dhaka District Police’s Detective Branch (DB) Md. Arafat Hossain, former Sub-Inspector of Ashulia Police Station Abdul Malek, Arafat Uddin, Kamrul Hasan, Sheikh Abjalul Haque, and former Constable Mukul Chokder.
Meanwhile, former MP Muhammad Saiful Islam and seven other accused in the case remain at large.
