Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister to Visit Dhaka Today for Bilateral Talks

Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar is set to arrive in Dhaka today, Saturday, August 23, 2025, for a two-day official visit. The Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka announced this in a press release on Friday, August 22.

According to the statement, Ishaq Dar will hold a bilateral meeting with Bangladesh’s interim government’s Foreign Affairs Adviser, Md. Touhid Hossain, on Saturday morning. Following this, he will pay a courtesy call on Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

The meetings will cover the full spectrum of bilateral relations, as well as several regional and international issues. Government sources in Dhaka revealed that during the visit, several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) are expected to be signed. These include agreements on visa-free travel for diplomatic and official passport holders, the formation of a working group to enhance bilateral trade, and cooperation between the state news agencies, foreign service academies, and government research institutes focusing on strategic issues. Additionally, a previously signed cultural cooperation agreement will be renewed. Discussions will also touch on sensitive topics such as the 1971 Liberation War atrocities by Pakistani forces, the transfer of Bangladesh’s share of pre-independence joint assets, and the repatriation of stranded Pakistanis. Ishaq Dar is also expected to hold courtesy meetings with former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, as well as leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami. This visit marks the first by a Pakistani Foreign Minister since Hina Rabbani Khar’s trip in 2012 for the D-8 Summit, during which she invited then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Following the ousting of Sheikh Hasina in August 2024 after a mass uprising and her subsequent departure to India, relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh have seen significant improvement. High-level engagements have progressed, trade restrictions on Pakistani goods have been lifted, and direct maritime trade between the two nations has commenced.
