Manchester, August 23, 2025 – Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has taken a playful jab at rival Premier League clubs for their heavy spending in the summer transfer window, pointing out that Manchester City is not the only club splashing the cash.
Liverpool have emerged as the top spenders in England, investing approximately €340 million (£295m) on new signings. Chelsea follow closely with €280m (£243m), while Arsenal are expected to reach around €300m with the anticipated signing of Eberechi Eze. Manchester United, under new manager Ruben Amorim, have already spent over €225m (£195m). In contrast, Manchester City’s expenditure stands at €177m (£153m), significantly lower than their rivals.
Commenting on the spending trends, Guardiola said in a recent media interaction, “I don’t know, but the clubs spend with the strict financial rules [of PSR], and they will only spend if they can do it. Apparently, it’s not just Manchester City [who are spending].” He added, “Everyone does what they believe is the best for the team. I know our net spend for the last 10-11 years is amazing. You don’t spend if you don’t sell. We have been really good, that’s why they’re sustainable.”
With over a week remaining in the transfer window, Premier League clubs have collectively spent £2.37bn ($3.2bn), and more big-money moves are expected before the deadline.
