Protesters Continue Blockade in Shahbagh Demanding Implementation of July Charter

Protesters demanding the implementation of the July Charter have continued their blockade at Shahbagh intersection in the capital. As of Friday afternoon, August 1, 2025, the demonstration persists, causing a halt in vehicular movement in the area.

The group, under the banner of “July Warriors” (July Yoddha), has been staging the blockade since Thursday morning to press for the implementation of the July Declaration and Charter and their inclusion in permanent provisions. The protest, organized by a platform called “July Yoddha Sangsad,” began around 10:30 AM on Thursday under the banner of July Shahid (Martyrs) Families and July Warriors (Injured).

According to Shahbagh Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khalid Monsur, the protesters maintained their position on the road throughout Thursday night and continued into Friday afternoon, undeterred by rain. Masud Rana, the chief organizer of July Yoddha Sangsad, stated on Thursday evening that the protest would continue until the July Charter is officially declared. On Thursday, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, the blockade caused significant disruptions in Shahbagh and surrounding areas, with commuters facing hardships due to the lack of transportation. Although the pressure of office-bound commuters was lower on Friday, a public holiday, those traveling through the area still experienced inconvenience. The protesters’ demands include official recognition of July martyrs and warriors; lifelong honor, medical care, education, and welfare support for martyrs’ families and the injured; state responsibility for the families of martyrs and the injured; full coverage of medical treatment, rehabilitation, employment, and welfare expenses for the injured; provision of lifelong honorarium for martyrs’ families and the injured; establishment of special legal protections and support centers for martyrs’ families and the injured; prosecution of those responsible for the oppression of martyrs and the injured in accordance with international standards; and the formation of an independent truth and justice commission.
