The Teesta Bridge, constructed with financial assistance from the Saudi Development Foundation and built by the Chinese contractor PC Girder, will be opened for vehicular and public movement tomorrow. The bridge establishes direct road connectivity between Gaibandha and Kurigram districts over the Teesta River.
Executive Engineer of Gaibandha LGED, Ujjwal Chowdhury, confirmed the information.
Stretching approximately 1,490 meters, the bridge is one of the largest constructed by the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED). It connects Haripur Ghat in Sundarganj Upazila of Gaibandha with Chilmari Ghat in Kurigram.
According to sources, the bridge will reduce the travel distance between Kurigram and Gaibandha by over 100 kilometers.
The total construction cost of the bridge amounted to Tk 730.85 crore, with Tk 279.47 crore spent on the main bridge, Tk 10.25 crore on approach roads, Tk 8.55 crore on river training, and Tk 6 crore on land acquisition.
The bridge is supported by 30 pillars, 28 of which are in the riverbed, and two on the banks. River training works span 3.15 kilometers on both sides of the bridge.
A total of 57.3 kilometers of new roads will be constructed at both ends of the bridge, including 7.3 kilometers from Matikata Junction in Chilmari to the bridge and 50 kilometers from Dhaperhat in Sadullapur Upazila to Haripur Bridge.
Officials believe that the bridge will boost the transportation of agricultural products in Kurigram, Gaibandha, and the Rangpur region, enabling farmers to deliver goods to markets faster. This will allow timely sales, increasing farmers' income and fostering socio-economic progress in the region.
