In Fakirhat, Bagerhat, a mob beat two youths accused of extortion and handed them over to the police. The incident occurred around 10 AM on Saturday (August 23) in the upazila headquarters.
The detained individuals are Mashrafi Sheikh (22), son of Mustak Sheikh, and Jacky Sheikh (28), son of Sheikh Zakir Hossain, both from Brahmarakdia village in the upazila.
According to locals, a theft occurred at the house of meat trader Saiful Islam on Tuesday (August 19). Local coconut trader Abdul Halim was assisting Saiful in recovering the stolen goods and identifying the thieves. On Friday night, Mashrafi, Jacky, and others allegedly assaulted Abdul Halim and snatched Tk 71,000 from him. On Saturday morning, around 10 AM, locals spotted Mashrafi and Jacky in the old alley of Fakirhat Bazar, apprehended them, and subjected them to a mob beating before handing them over to the police.
Locals further alleged that Mashrafi and Jacky have been involved in extortion and other criminal activities in the area. A meat trader named Bacchu Sheikh filed a written complaint at the police station accusing them of extortion.
In response, local men and women staged a protest march in Fakirhat, demanding that the detained individuals be brought to justice.
Fakirhat Model Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) Md. Alamgir Hossain said, “With the help of locals, two individuals have been detained on extortion charges. A case against them is under process, and they will be sent to the court on Sunday.”
