UNO Ruhel Sangma Allegedly Beats Day Laborer with Stick in Netrokona

In a shocking incident at Baniajan Union Parishad in Atpara Upazila, Netrokona, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ruhel Sangma has been accused of assaulting a day laborer named Durjoy with a stick, leaving him injured. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, has gained widespread attention after a video of the assault went viral on social media.

The victim, Durjoy (17), son of Shahid Miya from Bishnupur village, was reportedly attacked during the distribution of VGF (Vulnerable Group Feeding) rice. According to local sources, a minor collision occurred between Durjoy and the UNO while Durjoy was trying to collect rice amidst a crowd. Infuriated by the incident, the UNO allegedly took a stick from an Ansar guard and beat Durjoy severely in front of onlookers, leaving him seriously injured. Witnesses, including Durjoy’s aunt, Hepi Akter, pleaded with the UNO to stop, but their requests were ignored. The incident has sparked tension in the area.

Durjoy has filed a written complaint with the District Commissioner, Banani Biswas. However, both the District Commissioner and UNO Ruhel Sangma have been unreachable since the video surfaced online. In response to the incident, Rayhan, a local Jubo Dal leader, has filed a case in court, and the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has been tasked with investigating the matter. Hepi Akter, Durjoy’s aunt, stated, “I saw with my own eyes the UNO beating him. I apologized, but he didn’t listen.” ADC (General) Md. Rafiquzzaman commented, “I saw the incident on Facebook, but I don’t want to comment on it. The District Commissioner can provide better details.” PBI Inspector Zahid Islam confirmed, “We have received the court’s letter regarding the case. Once the paperwork arrives, the investigation will begin.”
The incident has caused widespread outrage, with the viral video amplifying calls for justice.
