A video of Abul Khayer, the convener of Chandina Upazila Youth Dal in Cumilla, has gone viral on social media, stirring discussions in local political circles. In the video, Abul Khayer is heard saying, "If needed, we will print separate ballots, ballots that will have the sheaf of paddy symbol." He later clarified that his statement was in response to comments made by another political leader.
The statement was made during a workers' meeting of the BNP’s Gallai Union unit in Chandina Upazila, held at Kongai High School ground on August 16. While Abul Khayer delivered a lengthy speech, a 10-second clip from his address went viral on social media on Friday.
In the viral video, Abul Khayer is heard saying, "When the ballots are printed, we will see. If needed, we will print separate ballots with the sheaf of paddy symbol. The sheaf of paddy will be in Chandina."
When contacted by Prothom Alo on Friday night regarding his statement about printing separate ballots, Abul Khayer explained, "A day before my speech, LDP General Secretary Redwan Ahmed said in a speech that he would contest the election with the umbrella symbol and that the sheaf of paddy would not be on Chandina’s ballots. Since no alliance has been finalized yet, nor has the election schedule been announced, I made this comment in response to his statement."
Abul Khayer clarified that his remarks were specific to Chandina and not about ballots nationwide. He alleged that a certain group edited his speech, circulating only the 10-second clip to create controversy. He added that those who heard his full speech understood the context. He also expressed regret if his words caused any distress, emphasizing that it was his personal statement.
Cumilla North District Youth Dal General Secretary Rezaul Karim commented, "I heard the fragmented statement that spread on Facebook. Abul Khayer informed me that he made the comment emotionally in response to LDP General Secretary Redwan Ahmed’s remarks. On Friday night, he went live on Facebook to provide a clear explanation of his statement."
