In Chandpur’s Shahrasti, police recovered the body of a three-year-old girl, Tasnua Tabassum, found in a sack 36 hours after she went missing. The incident has led to the arrest of her aunt, Sathi Akter, who is accused of the murder.
On Friday (September 5), Shahrasti Model Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Basar confirmed the incident to Dhaka Post. The child’s body, wrapped in a sack, was recovered from a pond near her home around midnight on Thursday.
Sathi Akter, wife of Md. Ripon Patowary, has been arrested in connection with the case. The victim, Tasnua Tabassum, was the daughter of Rubel Hossain, a truck driver from the Patowary family in Panchail village, Chitose East Union, Shahrasti Upazila. Rubel, the child’s father, has filed a murder case at Shahrasti Model Police Station.
According to police sources, Tasnua went missing on September 3 at around 9:30 AM while playing outside her home. After a frantic search by family members, her body was found in a sack in a pond behind their house late Thursday night. The police were informed, and the body was taken to the station.
Police investigations revealed that on Wednesday morning at around 10 AM, Sathi Akter was cooking rice when hot rice water accidentally spilled on Tasnua, causing burns across her body. As the child began screaming, Sathi allegedly suffocated her to stop her crying, resulting in her death. She then placed the body in a sack and hid it on the ceiling of the house. On Thursday, when a foul odor began emanating from the body, Sathi dumped the sack in the pond.
OC Abul Basar stated, “The child had been missing since Wednesday. The family searched the pond with divers but could not find her. Eventually, her body was recovered in a sack. The aunt has been arrested, and proceedings to send her to court are underway.
