Clash Over Facebook Post Leaves 120 Injured in Hathazari; Section 144 Imposed

Hathazari, Chattogram – At least 120 people were injured in a violent clash that erupted last night between students of Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam Hathazari Madrasa and supporters of Jashne Julus in Hathazari upazila, Chattogram, over a controversial Facebook post. The incident, which began around 8:00 PM near the Hathazari bus stand, continued intermittently until midnight, resulting in the vandalism of several passenger buses.

According to Chattogram Range DIG Ahsan Habib Palash, the clash was triggered by an offensive Facebook post about the madrasa, which led to escalating tensions as large groups from both sides joined the fray. "The individual responsible for posting the abusive photo about the Darul Ulum madrasa was arrested by Fatikchhari police prior to the clashes," he told The Daily Star.

Hospital and police sources confirmed that 120 people sustained injuries. Of these, 107 received treatment at Hathazari Upazila Health Complex, while 11 were admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, said Additional Superintendent of Police Kazi Tarek Aziz of Hathazari circle. To curb further unrest, the district administration imposed Section 144, prohibiting all gatherings from Egaromile to Mirer Hut Bazar until 3:00 PM today. Army personnel were deployed around 11:30 PM to disperse the groups, successfully bringing the situation under control. An emergency meeting is scheduled for 4:00 PM today at the Upazila Nirbahi Officer’s (UNO) office to assess the situation and determine additional measures to maintain peace.
