Ronaldo Scores Stunning Goals in Portugal’s 5-0 Rout of Armenia, Eyes Sixth World Cup

Cristiano Ronaldo kicked off his campaign for a record sixth World Cup appearance in style, scoring twice in Portugal’s dominant 5-0 victory over Armenia in their opening qualifier match. The 40-year-old football legend extended his record as the highest scorer in men’s international football with his 140th goal, showcasing his unrelenting drive as he nears the twilight of his illustrious career.

Ronaldo, who recently signed a new contract with Saudi club Al Nassr and led Portugal to UEFA Nations League glory last summer, remains determined to claim the one major trophy missing from his cabinet: the World Cup. A victory in the 2026 tournament, hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, could be his final chance to match his rival Lionel Messi, who won the title with Argentina in 2022. Both players are poised to become the only men to play in six World Cups.

Ronaldo’s second goal was a highlight, a thunderous 25-meter strike that rolled back the years, followed by his iconic arms-outstretched celebration. Joao Felix also netted twice, opening the scoring in the 10th minute, while Joao Cancelo added another goal in a commanding Group F performance at Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium. “It was a near-perfect performance,” said Portugal midfielder Vitinha. Elsewhere, England secured a 2-0 win over Andorra in Group K, maintaining their perfect qualifying record. An own goal by Christian Garcia and a Declan Rice header sealed the victory, though Thomas Tuchel’s side struggled to impress against the 174th-ranked team. England faces a tougher test against Serbia on Tuesday.
Portugal’s match was also marked by emotional tributes to former player Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who tragically died in a car accident in July. Ronaldo and Cancelo honored Jota with heartfelt celebrations.
