Dhaka: The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-2) and Hazaribagh Police Station conducted a joint operation in Uttara, Dhaka, leading to the arrest of five members of an international human trafficking syndicate, including its mastermind, Aminul Islam (46). The arrests were made at a residence in Sector 11, Uttara.The other arrested individuals are Abdul Hakim (56), Md. Nur Islam (31), Asaduzzaman (35), and Md. Shahriar Sheikh Murad (42). During the operation, authorities recovered nine passports, ten smartphones, one button phone, and Tk 1.56 crore in cash.
According to RAB, the syndicate lured victims with promises of sending them to Italy but instead took them to Egypt, holding them hostage and demanding ransoms of up to Tk 20 lakh.
Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Khan Asif Tapu of RAB-2 disclosed these details on Monday (September 8). He stated that the syndicate has been involved in human trafficking for a long time, using forged visas and passports to traffic people to the Middle East, Africa, and Europe. Targeting unemployed youth from various parts of the country, the group collected Tk 20-25 lakh from each victim under the pretense of sending them to Europe.
According to the case filed at Hazaribagh Police Station, the prime accused, Aminul Islam, took Tk 20 lakh from a victim named Zahid Hossain, a resident of Hazaribagh, promising to send him to Italy. On July 13, Zahid was taken to Egypt via Medina, where unidentified members of the syndicate held him hostage and demanded ransom.
Zahid’s brother filed a case under the Human Trafficking Prevention and Suppression Act at Hazaribagh Police Station. The National Security Intelligence (NSI) had been monitoring the syndicate for an extended period, and the successful operation was conducted based on their intelligence.
