Nepal's Home Minister Resigns Amid Intense Protests

Nepal's Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has resigned amid fierce protests against the KP Sharma Oli government's corruption and the recent ban on 26 social media platforms. The resignation came after at least 19 people were killed during the unrest led by Gen-Z youth.

On Monday, September 8, 2025, Lekhak submitted his resignation letter to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli following an emergency cabinet meeting, as reported by local media outlets. Earlier that day, during a meeting of Nepali Congress officials, the issue of the Home Minister's resignation was raised. Congress leaders demanded that he step down, accepting responsibility for the incident. The leaders questioned the use of force that led to widespread human casualties. After the meeting concluded, Lekhak prepared his resignation and submitted it to the Prime Minister. Local media reported that the protests began peacefully. Youths raised national flags, sang the national anthem, chanted slogans against the social media ban, and accused the government of corruption. As the protests spread to various areas, police resorted to tear gas deployment. Videos and photos circulated online during the protests showed many activists, dressed in school and college uniforms, participating in the marches. They were seen throwing branches and water bottles at the police, holding placards with slogans such as "Free Voice is Our Right" and "Where Did the Taxpayers' Money Go?" The protests, described as the bloodiest in two decades, resulted in 17 deaths in Kathmandu alone and two in Itahari, with over 400 injuries reported. Curfews were imposed in several cities including Kathmandu, Butwal, Bhairahawa, and Itahari to control the situation.
