Trump Administration Launches Immigration Crackdown in Massachusetts

The Trump administration has initiated an operation in Massachusetts to arrest and deport undocumented immigrants, targeting those with criminal records, according to reports by The New York Times and Boston media on Saturday, citing the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The operation, named "Patriot 2.0" by DHS and its Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arm, follows a similar campaign in May that led to the arrest of 1,500 people in the state.

A DHS spokesperson criticized Boston Mayor Michelle Wu’s sanctuary policies, claiming they harbor criminals and threaten public safety by prioritizing undocumented immigrants over law-abiding U.S. citizens. The operation focuses on immigrants released from local custody despite ICE detainer requests, with the campaign expected to last several weeks, according to unnamed sources cited by The New York Times.
The exact number of federal officers involved remains unclear. The crackdown coincides with preparations for similar operations in Chicago, the third-largest U.S. city. ICE is targeting individuals involved in serious crimes, including sexual offenders, child abusers, murderers, drug traffickers, and gang members, according to a DHS statement reported by NBC 10 Boston.
