Renowned singer Adnan Sami, originally from Pakistan, has found himself at the center of a heated controversy following remarks by former Pakistani minister Chaudhry Fawad Hussain. The dispute arose after the Indian government, in response to the Pehelgam attack, ordered all Pakistani nationals to leave the country by April 26, 2025.
Fawad Hussain questioned whether Adnan Sami would remain in India, sparking a public feud. In a sharp retort, Sami called the former minister an "uneducated fool" and clarified that he has been an Indian citizen since 2016. The singer emphasized his loyalty to India, where he has resided with his family in Mumbai.
The Indian government, under Home Minister Amit Shah, issued directives to state chief ministers to ensure all Pakistani nationals leave by April 27, 2025, with an extension until April 29 for those holding medical visas. Fawad Hussain’s query on X, implying ambiguity about Sami’s status, provoked a fiery response from the singer. Sami corrected the minister’s claim that he resides in Lahore, stating he hails from Peshawar, and accused Hussain of spreading misinformation despite his past role in Pakistan’s information ministry.
Sami’s strained relationship with Pakistan has been public for years. In 2022, he openly criticized the Pakistani government on social media, expressing his love for India and hinting at mistreatment by Pakistani authorities. “I have an issue with the Pakistani government, and those who know me know what they did to me. That’s the biggest reason I left Pakistan,” Sami wrote. He promised to one day reveal the full extent of his grievances, stating, “Most people don’t know what they did to me. The common man will be shocked. I’ve stayed silent for years, but I’ll speak at the right time.”
In an older BBC interview, Sami disclosed that obtaining Indian citizenship took 18 years of waiting, including a period of statelessness lasting one and a half years. He also revealed facing life-threatening risks in Pakistan, which prompted his move to India.
The public spat highlights ongoing tensions and Sami’s firm stance as an Indian citizen, distancing himself from his Pakistani roots while addressing criticism head-on.
