Dhaka: A Dhaka court has imposed a travel ban on four members of the prominent Sheikh family, including former MPs and political figures, following allegations of corruption and illegal wealth accumulation.
The decision was made on Thursday by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib in response to a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The individuals barred from traveling abroad are: Sheikh Salauddin Jewel, former Member of Parliament (MP) from Khulna-2 constituency. Sheikh Sohel, Jewel’s brother and a presidium member of the Jubo League, as well as a former director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Sheikh Jalaluddin Rubel, another brother involved in the maritime transport business. Sheikh Tanmoy, former MP from Bagerhat-2 constituency and son of Sheikh Helal, a cousin of the family.
The ACC’s application, submitted by Deputy Director Md. Mostafizur Rahman, stated that these individuals are under investigation for acquiring illegal wealth through irregularities and corruption during their association with the previous government.
The commission expressed concerns that the accused might attempt to flee the country, potentially obstructing the ongoing investigation. The court granted the travel ban to ensure a thorough probe into the allegations.
Sheikh Salauddin Jewel, son of Sheikh Abu Naser (the younger brother of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman), served as the MP for Khulna-2 in the 2018 and 2024 general elections. His brother Sheikh Sohel has been a prominent figure in the Jubo League and held a significant position in the BCB. Sheikh Jalaluddin Rubel, another sibling, is engaged in the shipping and transport business. Meanwhile, Sheikh Tanmoy, son of Sheikh Helal, represented Bagerhat-2 in the 2014 and 2018 elections.
ACC Public Relations Officer and Deputy Director Aktarul Islam confirmed that the commission’s petition was aimed at preventing the accused from leaving the country during the investigation. The application highlighted that former ministers and MPs from various constituencies are under scrutiny for amassing wealth through illicit means. “To ensure a fair and uninterrupted investigation, it was necessary to impose the travel ban,” the ACC stated in its plea.
The court’s decision marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to address corruption allegations against influential figures associated with the previous government. Further developments in the investigation are awaited as the ACC continues its probe into the financial dealings of the Sheikh family members.
