Expatriates injured or killed in road accidents in Oman have received a total of BDT 55 million (approximately USD 5 million) in compensation. The Bangladesh Embassy in Muscat played a pivotal role in facilitating the disbursement of these funds.
Among the recipients, Rafi Islam from Nilphamari, Rangpur, received 70,000 Omani Riyal, equivalent to approximately BDT 21.5 million. On Wednesday, April 23, 2025, a ceremony was held at the Bangladesh Embassy in Muscat, where Ambassador Khandaker Mizbah Ul Alam handed over the compensation checks to Rafi Islam and other affected expatriate families. Major Rafiul Islam, the embassy’s labor counselor, was also present.
The incident dates back to 2022, when Rafi Islam was severely injured in a bus accident in Muscat’s Koyadikbir area while traveling to his workplace with Gulfar Company. He underwent treatment in Oman for over two years and is now preparing to return to Bangladesh.
Rafi’s family sought assistance from the Bangladesh Embassy, which pursued the case through legal channels. After a prolonged legal process, the embassy’s lawyer successfully secured the compensation.
During the event, Ambassador Khandaker Mizbah Ul Alam urged expatriate Bangladeshis to directly contact the embassy for assistance in cases of accidents or legal issues, warning against falling prey to local agents or intermediaries.
