High Court Bans Cattle Market in Meradia, Bonoshree Ahead of Eid-ul-Adha

Dhaka, April 29, 2025: The High Court has ruled that no cattle market can be set up in Meradia, Bonoshree, Dhaka, for the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha. The decision was made by a High Court bench comprising Justice Kazi Zinat Hoque and Justice Ainun Nahar Siddiqua on Monday, April 28, 2025.

The ruling came in response to a writ petition filed by Shahabuddin Sarker, a resident of Bonoshree, challenging a lease notice issued by the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) on April 21, 2025, which announced plans for a cattle market in Meradia. Advocate Zahirul Islam, the petitioner’s lawyer, confirmed the court’s order on Tuesday, stating that the High Court suspended the lease notice for three months and issued a rule for further hearing.
Advocate Khurram Shah Murad, another lawyer involved in the case, explained that Bonoshree is a residential area, and a cattle market in Meradia would disrupt the entire locality, causing significant inconvenience to residents. The writ was filed on behalf of the local community to address these concerns.
The court’s decision has been welcomed by residents, who have long raised objections to the environmental and logistical issues caused by such markets in residential zones.
