Satkhira, April 25, 2025 – A horrific incident has shaken the residents of Batra village in Satkhira’s Kalaroa Upazila, where a mother allegedly killed her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter by slashing her with a machete while the child was asleep. The tragic event occurred around 12:30 PM on Friday, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
The victim, Khadija Khatun, was the daughter of Touhiduzzaman and Asma Khatun, residents of Kushodanga village in Kalaroa. According to locals, the accused mother, Asma Khatun (24), has been suffering from mental instability for a long time. On Thursday, Asma’s mother, Aleya Khatun, brought her to her parental home in Batra for medical treatment. On Friday, Asma put her daughter to sleep on the veranda, then retrieved a sharp machete from the kitchen and attacked the sleeping child, slashing her throat.
At the time of the incident, Aleya was out arranging a van for Asma’s treatment. Upon returning, she found Khadija lying in a pool of blood and raised an alarm. Neighbors rushed to the scene, apprehended Asma, and handed her over to the police.
Local Union Parishad member Mozabbar Hossain stated, “After the incident, Asma was sitting calmly, showing no remorse. We knew she was mentally unwell.” The Kalaroa Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC), Md. Asaduzzaman, said, “Preliminary findings suggest Asma is mentally unstable. She has been detained, and the child’s body has been sent to Satkhira Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.” A case is being prepared, and the incident has sparked widespread outrage in the area.
