Dhaka: Following a public uprising, the Election Commission's National Identity Registration Division has locked the National Identity Cards (NID) of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 10 members of her family.
According to official documents, this decision was implemented on February 16 under verbal instructions from the Director General of the National Identity Registration Division, ASM Humayun Kabir. However, it remains unclear whether the directive came directly from the Election Commission Secretariat.
The individuals whose NIDs have been locked include Sheikh Hasina, Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed, Saima Wazed, Sheikh Rehana, Tulip Rizwana Siddiq, Azmina Siddiq, Shahin Siddiq, Bushra Siddiq, Radwan Mujib Siddiq, and Tariq Ahmed Siddiq.
On August 5, 2004, Sheikh Hasina fled to India amidst a student-led movement and has remained there since. Under the prisoner extradition agreement between India and Bangladesh, the Bangladesh government has formally requested India to repatriate her.
