Dhaka, April 24, 2025
Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, has assured Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, of comprehensive support in the country’s ongoing reconstruction and reform efforts. The pledge was made during a high-level meeting held at the Prime Minister’s office in Doha on Thursday, April 24, 2025.
During the meeting, Sheikh Mohammed expressed unwavering confidence in Dr. Yunus’ leadership and reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Bangladesh. He emphasized Qatar’s desire to elevate the relationship to new heights and announced plans to appoint a close aide to coordinate enhanced cooperation between the two nations.
The Qatari Prime Minister expressed optimism about Bangladesh’s future, stating that the ongoing reforms and restructuring under Dr. Yunus’ interim government would position the country to emerge stronger in the coming years. “We have full faith in your continued leadership,” he told Dr. Yunus, underscoring Qatar’s readiness to provide diplomatic, financial, and investment support to help Bangladesh achieve its goals.
Dr. Yunus, in turn, sought Qatar’s full cooperation in building a “new Bangladesh” that creates opportunities for its nearly 180 million people, particularly its youth. “We need your support to build a country that fulfills the dreams of our young generation,” he said, highlighting the need for investments and partnerships to foster economic growth and a prosperous future.
Sheikh Mohammed urged Dr. Yunus to send a technical team to Qatar to discuss various avenues of cooperation, signaling a proactive approach to deepening ties. The discussions also covered the Rohingya crisis, with Dr. Yunus calling for Qatar’s assistance in ensuring the dignified repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar. He thanked the Qatari Prime Minister for supporting a high-level dialogue on the Rohingya issue during the sidelines of the upcoming Arthana Summit.
Sheikh Mohammed commended Bangladesh for hosting over one million Rohingya refugees and reiterated Qatar’s commitment to supporting sustainable solutions to the crisis. He called for stronger international backing to address the issue and pledged continued assistance to the refugees sheltered in Bangladesh. The leaders also discussed the situation in Gaza, reflecting their shared concern for global humanitarian challenges.
The meeting was attended by key Bangladeshi officials, including Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain, Energy Adviser Fouzul Kabir Khan, National Security Adviser Dr. Khalilur Rahman, and Chief Coordinator for SDG Affairs Lamiya Morshed.
This assurance from Qatar, a key player in the Middle East, marks a significant step in bolstering Bangladesh’s reconstruction efforts under Dr. Yunus’ leadership, as the interim government works to stabilize and transform the nation following recent challenges.
