In a successful late-night operation, Bagerhat police rescued three Sri Lankan nationals who were kidnapped for ransom in Mollahat upazila. The rescue took place around 12:30 AM on Wednesday (April 23) at the residence of Kazi Emdad Hossain in Dakshin Ambari village. During the operation, four individuals involved in the kidnapping were apprehended.
The rescued Sri Lankan citizens are Malavi Pathirana, Pathirana, and Thuppi Mudiyanselage Neel, including one female. The police confirmed that the rescued individuals are safe and are receiving necessary medical and administrative support.
The arrested suspects are Kazi Emdad Hossain (52), son of Serat Kazi from Dakshin Ambari, Shahidul Sheikh (24), son of Sabur Sheikh, Joni Sheikh (38), son of Zakir Sheikh from Khatiyagarh village in Gopalganj Sadar upazila, and SM Samsul Alam (45), son of SM Shahab Uddin from Charkulia. Samsul Alam was detained in a separate operation on Thursday morning. The police are preparing to file a case against the suspects.
According to police sources, two of the three Sri Lankan nationals had arrived in Dhaka on April 22 at the invitation of Shahidul Sheikh from Bagerhat for business purposes. Subsequently, a ransom demand was made to their families in Sri Lanka from a Bangladeshi phone number. Acting on confidential information, the police launched a swift operation, rescuing the victims and apprehending the kidnappers.
Bagerhat Police Superintendent Md. Tauhidul Arif stated, “Based on credible intelligence, we conducted a rapid operation and safely rescued the three Sri Lankan nationals. Four individuals involved in the kidnapping have been arrested, and legal proceedings are in progress.”
The incident has sparked significant concern in the local community. Residents noted that such an event is unprecedented and alarming for the area. The police are continuing their investigation to determine the motive behind the kidnapping and whether others are involved.
