10 Smugglers Arrested with 600 Sacks of Urea Fertilizer in Rakhine Smuggling Attempt

May 2, 2025 : The Bangladesh Coast Guard detained 10 smugglers along with 600 sacks of urea fertilizer being illegally smuggled to Rakhine, Myanmar, evading customs duties. The operation took place on Thursday, May 1, in the Chhera Island area south of Saint Martin’s Island.

According to a press release issued on Friday by Lieutenant Commander HMM Harun-or-Rashid, Coast Guard Media Officer, a suspicious wooden boat with an engine was spotted during a patrol. The boat’s presence was deemed illegal due to the ongoing 58-day fishing ban in the Bay of Bengal. When signaled to stop, the boat attempted to flee at high speed but was intercepted by a Coast Guard vessel.
A search of the boat revealed 600 sacks of urea fertilizer being smuggled without customs clearance. The 10 smugglers, hailing from Cox’s Bazar and Chattogram, were apprehended. The seized fertilizer was handed over to Teknaf Customs, and the smugglers were transferred to Teknaf Model Police Station.
Lieutenant Commander Harun-or-Rashid added that the Coast Guard maintains round-the-clock patrols to ensure law and order. These efforts have significantly improved the security situation in coastal and riverine areas, bringing smuggling activities under control. Such operations will continue in the future to curb illegal activities.
