Cumilla, May 2, 2025: The Local Government Division has temporarily suspended Md. Abu Taher, Chairman of Chiora Union Parishad in Cumilla’s Chauddagram Upazila, for issuing birth certificates to two Rohingya women.
The suspension was confirmed by Chauddagram Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Jamal Hossain on Friday, May 2, as reported.
The order for suspension was issued on Tuesday, April 29, through a notification signed by Touhid Elahi, Senior Assistant Secretary of the Local Government Ministry’s UP-1 Section. The notification cited that investigations confirmed allegations against Abu Taher, including issuing birth registration certificates in favor of Rohingya individuals, transferring his user ID and password to another person, lack of awareness, and negligence in performing his duties.
According to sources from the Upazila Nirbahi Officer’s office, on June 11 of the previous year, two Rohingya women, Humaira and Sharmin Akter, were detained by immigration police at Dhaka International Airport while attempting to travel to Vietnam. Subsequently, on June 15, a case was filed against them at Chauddagram Police Station by Sub-Inspector (SI) Imam Hossain of Cumilla’s Detective Branch (DSB). On June 27, the two women were arrested and sent to jail through the court.
Further investigation revealed that Kazi Khabir Uddin, son of Kazi Shamsul Haque from Dimatali village under Chiora Union Parishad, posed as the father of the two women to obtain birth certificates from the Union Parishad. These certificates were later used to acquire national ID cards and passports in an attempt to travel to Vietnam. As a result of this incident, Chairman Abu Taher has been suspended.
