48-Hour Ultimatum Issued for Arrest of Shahriar Alam Samy’s Killers: Students Surround Shahbagh Police Station

Campus, May 16, 2025 : Students of Dhaka University (DU), under the banner of the general student community, have issued a 48-hour ultimatum to authorities demanding the arrest of those responsible for the murder of Shahriar Alam Samy, a DU student and leader of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal. On Friday, May 16, students staged a protest by surrounding the Shahbagh Police Station to press their demands.

The protest began shortly before noon when students marched from the Raju Sculpture to the Shahbagh Police Station. Upon reaching the station, they chanted slogans demanding the immediate arrest of Samy’s killers. A delegation of students entered the police station to discuss the progress of the investigation and the arrest process with senior police officials.
Earlier, at around 11:30 AM, a rally was held in front of the Raju Sculpture to protest Samy’s murder. During this gathering, the students announced the 48-hour ultimatum for the arrest of the perpetrators. The students allege that the main culprits behind Samy’s murder are being shielded for political reasons. They further claim that the police have facilitated the escape of the primary suspect, possibly through financial transactions.
The students have warned that they will escalate their protests if the killers are not arrested and brought to justice within the stipulated time. A milad and prayer session was organized on campus after Friday prayers to pray for the departed soul of Samy.
Khalid Mansur, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shahbagh Police Station, stated that three individuals have already been arrested in connection with Samy’s murder, and the investigation is ongoing. However, he expressed concern that the students’ encirclement of the police station could disrupt the normal investigation process.
