90 Indian Cattle Seized with Trawler in Sunamganj

Sunamganj, May 1, 2025: Authorities in Sunamganj intercepted a smuggling operation involving 90 Indian cattle being transported via a trawler along the Surma River, which flows beside Sunamganj town. The seizure occurred during an operation on Wednesday evening (April 30) in the Sahebbari Ghat area. Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) officials estimate the value of the seized cattle to be approximately Tk 7 million.

According to district administration sources, the cattle were smuggled into Bangladesh from India’s Meghalaya state through the Bhoglabazar border in Doarabazar upazila. The cattle were mixed with local ones at the Bhoglabazar cattle market and falsely documented as local to facilitate their transport to various parts of the country via the river route. Acting on intelligence, a team led by Executive Magistrate Mehedi Hasan Hridoy, with support from the 28 BGB Sunamganj Battalion, conducted the raid, seizing the 90 cattle and the trawler.
Lieutenant Colonel Zakaria Kadir, commanding officer of the 28 BGB Battalion, stated, “We received prior information about a large consignment of Indian cattle being transported through Sunamganj via the river. Based on that, we launched the operation.” The seized cattle are currently held at the 28 BGB camp in Sunamganj. Verification by livestock officials confirmed that most of the cattle originated from Meghalaya. For now, the cattle will be handed over to local custody.
The administration has announced that a regular case will be filed, and further actions will be taken as per court directives.
