Public Trust, Not Weapons, is Police’s True Strength: IGP at National Dialogue

Dhaka, May 1, 2025: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam emphasized that the real strength of the police lies not in weapons but in earning the trust of the public. Speaking at a dialogue titled “People’s Police in Citizens’ Vision: A Bond of Security and Trust” during Police Week 2025 at the Bangladesh Police Auditorium in Rajarbag Police Lines, Dhaka, he said, “History teaches us that it is not arms but public confidence that is the police’s true power. If the police genuinely stand by the people, they cease to be a symbol of fear and become a source of trust.”

The event, attended by prominent citizens, featured Dr. Salimullah Khan as the keynote speaker. IGP Alam noted that public perception of the police turns positive when the force not only enforces the law but also protects citizens’ rights and upholds human values. “‘People’s Police’ is not just an identity; it is a philosophy that fosters trust, respect, and security,” he added.
Distinguished attendees, including The New Age editor Nurul Kabir, industrialist Syed Nasim Manzur, and Dhaka University professor Sajjad Siddiqui, among others, stressed the need for a politically neutral police force that serves the public. They called for an end to the misuse of police by political powers and advocated for greater autonomy to enhance the force’s credibility.
Dr. Salimullah Khan highlighted the need for open discussions on the police’s declining public image, urging efforts to bridge the gap between the police and the public. Nurul Kabir emphasized that the police must develop the intellect to distinguish between justice and injustice to truly become a people’s force. Syed Nasim Manzur underscored the importance of capacity-building and independence for the police, while Professor Sajjad Siddiqui called for stopping the abuse of police power by the state.
The dialogue, attended by educators, journalists, religious leaders, writers, athletes, artists, economists, and labor leaders, was concluded by Additional IGP Golam Rasul, who affirmed the police’s commitment to standing alongside the people, not against them, as a true “people’s police
