Dhaka, May 6, 2025 – Bangladesh has called for the inclusion of Rohingya representation in the administration led by the Arakan Army in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, according to National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman. Speaking to journalists at the Foreign Ministry on Tuesday, Rahman emphasized Bangladesh’s stance on ensuring Rohingya participation at all levels of the new Rakhine administration.
Addressing the issue of newly arrived Rohingya refugees, Rahman stated that decisions regarding their housing would be made considering the environmental and situational context. He added that Bangladesh has conveyed its message to the Arakan Army through the United Nations, advocating for Rohingya inclusion in governance.
Rahman further noted that Bangladesh will maintain communication with any group across the border, regardless of external opinions, and stressed that there is currently no need for additional measures to secure the border. He also reiterated Bangladesh’s opposition to ethnic persecution.
Regarding the UN’s proposal for a humanitarian corridor in Rakhine, Rahman said discussions would be held with all political parties in Bangladesh. He clarified that even if all parties agree, the final decision on establishing the corridor would rest with Dhaka.
The proposal for a humanitarian corridor was first raised by UN Secretary-General António Guterres during his visit to Bangladesh in March, seeking cooperation for humanitarian operations in Rakhine. On April 27, Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain, in a press briefing at the Foreign Ministry, confirmed Bangladesh’s in-principle agreement to the UN’s proposal.
