Breakthrough in Rechargeable Battery Technology: 80% Charge in Just 6 Minutes

29 May, 2025 : A groundbreaking development in battery technology has emerged from India, where scientists have invented a sodium-based battery (SIB) capable of charging up to 80% in just six minutes. This innovation, led by researchers at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) under India’s Ministry of Science and Technology, could revolutionize the use of electronic devices and electric vehicles.

Unlike the widely used lithium-ion batteries, which dominate devices like mobile phones, laptops, and electric vehicles due to their rechargeability, the new sodium-ion battery offers a cost-effective and efficient alternative. Traditional sodium-ion batteries have been less popular due to slow charging speeds and shorter lifespans. However, this new battery, developed using NASICON-type cathode and anode materials, overcomes these limitations.
The research team, led by Associate Professor Premkumar Senguttuvan and PhD scholar Biplab Patra, enhanced the battery’s performance by shrinking particles to the nanoscale, coating them with a thin layer of carbon, and adding small amounts of aluminum to improve anode quality. These modifications allow sodium ions to move faster and more securely, ensuring rapid charging and greater durability. The battery can withstand at least 3,000 charge cycles, making it a robust option for long-term use.
Lithium, a scarce and expensive resource in India, is largely imported, whereas sodium is abundant and affordable. This makes the new battery a promising solution for applications in electric vehicles, solar-powered grids, drones, and rural electrification. The technology has passed initial electrochemical cycling and quantum simulation tests, but further development is needed before it can be commercialized.
This innovation marks a significant step toward sustainable and cost-effective energy storage, with the potential to transform industries globally.
