Chief Adviser Calls for Greater Youth Participation in Politics

Dhaka, May 6, 2025 :Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has urged young people to actively participate in political activities to transform their dreams into reality and bring meaningful change to their communities.

The call was made during a meeting with a delegation of young political activists from various Norwegian political parties at the state guesthouse Yamuna on Tuesday, according to a statement from the Chief Adviser’s press wing.

Encouraging youth involvement, Yunus emphasized, “We are motivating young people to join politics; otherwise, they cannot play an active role in policymaking.” He inquired about the political backgrounds, perspectives, and activities of the visiting activists, as well as the percentage of youth participation in Norway’s mainstream politics.
The Norwegian delegation shared their experiences of meeting Bangladeshi youth, noting that many had never voted in their lifetime. They asked what the interim government was doing to ensure voting rights for Bangladeshi youth.
In response, Yunus highlighted the interim government’s commitment to systemic reforms, stating, “For the past 15 years, people have been unable to vote. Over three terms, a fraudulent voting system was in place; despite claims of success, no one could actually vote. Institutional reforms are necessary to ensure that young people can exercise their voting rights.”
Describing the country’s political environment as outdated, Yunus noted that the interim government’s primary challenge is clearing the inherited “mess.” He added, “This is a transitional period for us, and I hope it will be brief.”
The Norwegian delegation included Nazma Ahmed, deputy leader of the Socialist Youth League; Fauzi Warsame, international leader of AUF and central board member; Dan Skotfjord, member of the Centre Party; Ola Sevnby, member of the Conservative Party; Hadle Rasmus Bulland, member of the Christian Democrats; Tobias Stokkeland, member of Green Youth, an affiliate of the Green Party; and Thyra Haakons Lokk, former leader of the Young Liberals.
