National | May 17, 2025 : A Dhaka court has sent former Member of Parliament Momtaz Begum to jail after the completion of her remand in connection with a murder case filed at Mirpur Model Police Station over the anti-discrimination student movement.
On Saturday (May 17), the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Minhazur Rahman rejected her bail plea and issued the order following a hearing.
After the remand period, Momtaz Begum was produced before the court. The investigating officer of the case, Sub-Inspector (SI) Monirul Islam of Mirpur Model Police Station, applied for her detention in jail. While the defense sought bail, the prosecution opposed it. After hearing both sides, the court denied bail and ordered her to be sent to jail.
Earlier, Momtaz Begum was arrested from Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area around 11:45 PM on May 12. The following day, May 13, the court granted a four-day remand for her.
According to the case details, on July 19, Md. Sagar participated in the anti-discrimination student movement at Mirpur-10 Gol Chattar area. Around 4:30 PM that day, the accused allegedly attacked and opened fire on the protesters. Sagar was shot in the chest, and the bullet exited through his back, leading to his death. His mother, Beauty Akter, found his body at a private hospital in Mirpur at around 3 AM that night. She later took her son’s body to their village home for burial.
On November 27, Beauty Akter filed a case at Mirpur Model Police Station as the plaintiff. The case named 243 individuals, including Sheikh Hasina, and listed 250-400 unidentified persons as accused. Momtaz Begum is the 49th accused named in the FIR.
