Former Shibir Leader Arrested with Fake Notes in Chattogram

Chattogram, May 4, 2025: Police arrested three individuals, including a student of the University of Chattogram (CU), with counterfeit notes worth Tk31,000 during an operation on the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar highway in Lohagara Upazila on Saturday, May 3. The arrests were made in the Chunati Jangalia area when police intercepted a passenger microbus.

The arrested individuals are identified as Md. Moddachir (25), son of the late Shawkat Ali from Rajapalong, Ukhiya Upazila, Cox’s Bazar; his younger sister Hafiza Akter (19); and a Rohingya woman, Halima Akter (20). Moddachir is a student of the Islamic Studies Department at CU, enrolled in the 2019-2020 session.
Saiful Islam, the general secretary of Ukhiya Upazila Chhatra Shibir, confirmed that Moddachir previously served as the general secretary of the same unit but has not held any position since December last year. Meanwhile, Mohammad Ali Obaidullah, the general secretary of the CU Chhatra Shibir branch, denied Moddachir’s association with their organization, stating that he only knows him as a university student.
According to police, the trio was transporting counterfeit notes collected from a Rohingya camp to sell in Chattogram. Acting on a tip-off, police recovered 13 fake Tk1,000 notes and 36 fake Tk500 notes from their bags.
Lohagara Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Arifur Rahman told Dhaka Post that a case has been filed against the accused under relevant laws. They were presented in court on Sunday, May 4, following their arrest.
