Dhaka, May 4, 2025 – The Safe Roads Movement (NISA) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the government, demanding a complete ban on the production, sale, and import of autorickshaw parts. The announcement was made during a press conference held on Sunday in front of the National Museum in Shahbag, Dhaka.
NISA leaders warned of launching a tougher movement if their demands are not met within the stipulated timeframe. The organization highlighted that autorickshaws are responsible for a significant number of road accidents and contribute heavily to traffic congestion across the country.
Abdullah Mehedi Deepto, President of NISA, stated during the press conference, “Autorickshaws are a major cause of most accidents. They are not only responsible for crashes but also a key factor in creating traffic jams. Within seven days, the import of autorickshaw parts, their production, and sales must be stopped.”
The movement also demanded a ban on autorickshaws operating on roads and highways. Additionally, NISA called for the rehabilitation of autorickshaw drivers, proposing their training and employment as bus or human hauler drivers.
The speakers at the press conference further pointed out that the charging stations established for battery-operated autorickshaws are exacerbating the country’s electricity crisis, adding pressure on the national power grid.
NISA’s demands come in the wake of ongoing concerns about road safety in Bangladesh, where poorly regulated vehicles and inadequate traffic management have led to frequent accidents and fatalities. The organization’s call for stricter measures aims to address these systemic issues and improve road safety nationwide.
If the government fails to comply with the ultimatum, NISA has vowed to escalate its protests, potentially disrupting public order to press for immediate action.
