Friend Killed Over Tk 30 Dispute in Dhaka

May 21, 2025, Dhaka: In a shocking incident in Motijheel, Dhaka, a man was killed by his friend over a dispute involving just Tk 30, according to Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) spokesperson Deputy Commissioner (DC) Muhammad Talebur Rahman. The suspect, Rakib, was arrested on Tuesday (May 20) near the Peer Jongi Mazar area by Motijheel Ideal School. Following his arrest, police uncovered the motive behind the murder.

DC Muhammad Talebur Rahman confirmed that the victim, Momin, and the suspect, Rakib, were friends. Rakib worked as a cleaner, while Momin was employed at a shop. On May 12 evening, Rakib, Momin, and another friend, Alamin, picked mangoes from trees in AGB Colony and Al Helal Zone, selling them for Tk 390 at the AGB Colony raw market. After dividing the money, Alamin received Tk 130 and left. However, Rakib spent Tk 80 from the remaining Tk 260, leading to a dispute with Momin.
Around 9 PM that night, near a garbage bin in front of Motijheel Postal Officers’ Colony, Rakib gave Momin Tk 100 from the mango sale proceeds. When Momin demanded an additional Tk 30, an argument ensued, and both went home. The next day, on May 13 at around 10 AM, the two met again near the same garbage bin, and the dispute over the Tk 30 escalated.
During the altercation, Rakib slapped Momin, prompting Momin to attempt to hit Rakib with a brick. In response, Rakib stabbed Momin in the neck with a knife used for cutting mangoes. Momin collapsed, and Rakib arranged a rickshaw to take him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors pronounced Momin dead. Rakib fled the hospital but was later arrested by police following a case filed at Motijheel Police Station. He confessed to the crime in court and was sent to jail, DC Rahman added.
