The Handicraft, Embroidery, and Hand Embroidery Workers Federation has called for a ban on the import of foreign clothing, particularly completed garments from India, as part of their nine-point demands. The organization staged a human chain protest in front of the National Press Club on Thursday, May 1, to press for their demands.
The event was presided over by the federation’s president, Md. Ibrahim Hasan Mithu. In his speech, he criticized the exploitation of workers by politically affiliated labor organizations, outdated labor laws, and the plight of millions of workers trapped in the informal sector. He stated that these issues have rendered the significance of International Workers’ Day questionable.
The federation presented the following nine demands: Provide elderly workers with old-age allowances and ensure housing facilities for workers.
Facilitate government-supported overseas employment for workers contributing to remittances and establish an inquiry cell to ensure workplace standards.
Prohibit arbitrary termination of workers, set wages based on current market rates, and ensure employment opportunities. Impose a ban on importing completed foreign clothing, including Indian garments.
Ensure timely payment of wages, including overtime compensation. Establish training centers to provide skill development programs to sustain the handicraft industry.
Enforce labor laws strictly and ensure their effective implementation.
Reform and digitize labor courts, setting time limits to ensure swift justice.
Promote independent labor organizations free from political influence, simplify their registration process, and formulate a special policy for informal sector workers to ensure healthcare, housing, and social security.
Additionally, establish a neutral monitoring cell with government, worker representatives, and experts to implement ILO Conventions 87 and 98.
The federation urged the government to address these demands to protect the rights and livelihoods of handicraft workers.
