Dhaka, May 1, 2025: The Great May Day was observed across Bangladesh under the theme, ‘Shramik-Malik Ek Hoye, Gorbo Ei Desh Natun Kore’ (Workers and Employers Unite to Build the Nation Anew). The central event took place at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre, where Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus was present.
Labor leaders addressed the gathering, demanding justice for the oppression faced by workers over the past 15 years. They emphasized workers’ rights, the need for labor-friendly laws, and the importance of health and safety insurance for workers. Sultan Uddin Ahmed, head of the Labor Reform Commission, highlighted that the commission’s recommendations reflect the spirit of May Day. He noted that since the interim government took office, new initiatives have been launched for workers, including amendments to labor laws and the establishment of an Employment Department based on skill levels.
The event also highlighted ongoing efforts to provide healthcare services to workers nationwide, the introduction of a hotline for workers, and financial assistance for those injured in workplace accidents. Labor Reform Commission officials stated that the implementation of reforms would begin in phases.
Beyond Dhaka, May Day was observed in nearly every district of the country through various programs organized by different organizations. Rallies, workers’ assemblies, discussion sessions, seminars, and cultural events were held by governmental and non-governmental institutions to mark the occasion.
