International Desk, 27 May 2025 : India’s Ministry of Defence has approved a proposal to develop a new fifth-generation fighter jet using entirely indigenous technology and funding. The aircraft will be developed under the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) project.
In a statement issued on Monday, May 26, 2025, the ministry said, “To enhance India’s indigenous defence capabilities and secure its airspace, the ministry has approved the proposal to build a new fifth-generation fighter jet.” This aircraft will be India’s first indigenously developed fifth-generation fighter, equipped with advanced ‘stealth’ technology, enabling it to operate undetected.
The ministry described the project as a ‘milestone initiative’ in India’s defence sector, stating, “This project is a significant step toward achieving self-reliance in the military domain.” The Indian government has allocated a budget of 15,000 crore rupees for this initiative.
Previously, under the AMCA project, India developed the ‘Tejas’ fighter jet in 2016 using homegrown technology. The new aircraft is expected to match the high-speed capabilities of advanced fighters like the US-made F-22 Raptor, which can reach speeds of up to 2,077 kilometers per hour.
