Dhaka, 27 May 2025 : Supporters of BNP leader Ishraq Hossain, along with members of the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Employees’ Union, staged a protest by blocking the road in front of Nagar Bhaban, demanding that Ishraq be officially handed over the responsibilities of DSCC mayor. The demonstration began around 11:30 AM on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at the main gate of Nagar Bhaban.
About an hour later, supporters from various parts of southern Dhaka joined the protest in small processions. The demonstrators chanted slogans such as “We want oath, we want Ishraq Bhai’s oath,” “No more delays with the mayor, we won’t tolerate it,” “The fight continues, Ishraq Bhai will fight,” and “Nagar Pita Ishraq Bhai, we haven’t forgotten you.”
Jafar Ahmed, a supporter of Ishraq, blamed the Local Government Advisor, Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, for the delay in handing over the mayoral responsibilities. He stated, “Despite two court rulings, the deliberate delays and administrative excuses by the advisor have stalled the transition. We will stay on the streets until the mayor is instated.”
The protest led to the closure of the road in front of Nagar Bhaban, causing severe inconvenience to commuters. A long queue of vehicles was observed from High Court Crossing to Gulistan. Rajjab Ali, a resident of Azimpur who came to obtain a trade license, expressed frustration, saying, “It took a long time to reach here, and after Dhaka Medical, I had to walk due to the blockade. The Nagar Bhaban is locked, and there’s a protest outside. How long will this continue? They should at least keep services open for ordinary citizens like us.”
