Top Criminals Subrata Bain and Mollah Masud Arrested in Kushtia

Kushtia, 27 May 2025 :  Army has arrested two notorious criminals, Subrata Bain and his associate Mollah Masud, in a dramatic three-hour operation in Kushtia’s Kalishankarpur area on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

The operation took place at a rented house on Sonar Bangla Road, where army personnel surrounded the premises in the early hours and detained the duo, taking them away in a military vehicle. According to locals, around 8 AM, army members arrived in a black microbus, handcuffed a bearded man and tied up another young man before escorting them away. The army stated that a press briefing at 5 PM will provide detailed information about the arrests.

Subrata Bain and Mollah Masud were among the 23 top criminals listed by the BNP-Jamaat government on December 25, 2001. An Interpol red notice remains active against Subrata Bain, and the Ministry of Home Affairs had announced a reward for his capture. Mollah Masud, his close associate, was the second-in-command of the infamous Moghbazar-based ‘Seven Star Group,’ formed in 1997 by Subrata Bain, Tanvirul Islam Joy, Tokai Sagar, Tikka, Selim, Chanchal, and Mollah Masud. This group was notorious for controlling tenders, extortion, and murders in Dhaka.
In the 1990s, Subrata Bain gained notoriety for extortion and controlling tenders around Moghbazar’s Bishal Centre, earning the moniker ‘Subrata of Bishal Centre.’ He fled to India in 2004, where he operated businesses and sent extorted money from Bangladesh via hundi. He was arrested in Kolkata in 2008 but was not extradited to Bangladesh. Similarly, Mollah Masud, who fled to India in 2004, was arrested in West Bengal in 2015 but was not brought back to Bangladesh.
Following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government, Subrata Bain and other top criminals, released on bail, attempted to reestablish dominance in Dhaka’s Moghbazar, Motijheel, Mohammadpur, and Mirpur areas. They engaged in extortion from satellite cable TV, internet services, tenders, footpaths, markets, and land grabbing.
Kushtia’s Additional Superintendent of Police, Faisal Mahmud, told the media, “We had no operation there. We are trying to find out if any other force conducted it.”
