Palli Bidyut Samity Workers Continue 7th Day of Sit-in, Nationwide Work Stoppage
On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, the sit-in program continued at the Shaheed Minar. The protesting workers stated that despite seven days of demonstrations, no government representative has reached out to them. They vowed to continue their movement until their legitimate demands are met.
On Monday, May 26, Engineer Tajul Islam, president of the Palli Bidyut Association, announced a nationwide work stoppage while ensuring customer services remain unaffected. He said, “This movement is for building a discrimination-free, modern electricity distribution system. Around 45,000 officers and employees from 80 Palli Bidyut Samities across the country are participating spontaneously.” He accused the Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) of misleading the government to divert the direction of this justified movement. “Our struggle is solely against the exploitation, discrimination, oppression, and injustice of BREB. It has no connection with any other individual or organization,” he clarified.
The protesters are demanding the elimination of the dual management system between BREB and PBS, implementation of a uniform service code, withdrawal of false cases, cancellation of punitive transfers, regularization of contractual and irregular employees, and enforcement of fixed working hours. They have called for sincere government intervention, warning of tougher actions if their demands are not met.
